    Halloween Activities

A trunk-or-treat Halloween event has become a popular tradition among congregations.  This type of event offers a fun family oriented outing for kids to enjoy the trick-or-treating experience in a safe environment.  With clever decorations, costumes and fun games or prizes, it is an event all ages can enjoy.  It can also be an added exposure to any risk.  So, please plan carefully and manage the event with a keen eye on safety.

LOCATION
Designate a specific area for the event to operate.  Define the area with appropriate safety barriers, signage and lighting.  Inspect the area for trip and fall hazards.  Repair areas in need of maintenance and rope off all areas not intended for foot traffic.  Items like car trunks, tail gates, parking bumpers, utility ground covers and other hazards should be highlighted to avoid an accident.  Also, consider appropriate restroom and sanitation options to accommodate an outdoor event.

PARTICIPATION
Require a pre-approved list of all those handing out goodies.  It may be wise to allow only volunteers and staff members who have been screened to pass out treats.  We would not recommend allowing unknown individuals to participate in the distribution of candy.

GUESTS
This is an excellent opportunity to connect as a congregation as well as reach out to the community at large.  Perhaps involve the youth group by hosting or sponsoring kid-friendly games.  Other committees may benefit the event by serving at a welcome booth.  It is an easy opportunity to greet guests, form connections and offer information like site maps and other aids to help keep the event safe and secure.

PROCEDURES
Finally, clearly designate rules and requirements for all participating.  What are the hours of operation?  What are appropriate decorations, treats and costumes for participants? Who is enforcing and overseeing the safety and security of the property and its guests?  What are the emergency plans?  Have all exposures been carefully considered to meet insurance guidelines and safety requirements?
